Report from FIBA Camp in Slovenia
Aug 11, 2013, 9:31 pm

Kathleen Kelleher (of Brunnell BC in Cork) recently attended the 7th FIBA Europe International Basketball Camp in Slovenia as a referee. Below is her report of the camp and the trip overall.

DAY 1 (Sunday) : I left for the bus station at 2 to get the bus to dublin airport at half 2. Arrived at 5:45am. At 6:45 i met up with the two irish players Verity and Aoife and the coach Niamh. we left at 8:15am on the flight to london stansted and flew from london to ljunlana . when we arrived in slovenia airport we had to wait a few hours for the russians team plane to land so we could travel to the hotel with them aswell. we arrived at the hotel to have dinner and check in . after getting my officiating equipment i went to the other hotel with the refs we all got to know each other down in the lobby of the hotel for the night. and headed to bed for an early night at 11.

DAY 2(Tuesday): woke at 7:50 am for breakfast. travelled to camp to have the opening ceremony where the general manager of the camp Vlado Velikonja officially opened the camp. He then introduced all the rest of the staff to us including FIBA Europe Womens basketball consultant Ester Wender FIBA Europe Coaching Instructor Fabio Fossati and FIBA Europe Referee Instructors Kati Nynas and Chantal Julien. after this was done came back to the meeting room for an introduction session we we talked for two mins about ourselves and what makes us want to ref basketball . next session was mechanics of 3PO and after a break we watched videos about 3PO and had a discussion about them.. we travelled to the other hotel again for some amazing lunch oh and by the way the weather is unreal :).. from 4:30 to 5:30 we had a session on philosophy of officiating where we talked about how to deal with preparing for games before during and after. Chantal then gave us the nominations for the officiating of games in the afternoon. we had a short break and then changed into out refin gear and headed to the court to officiate the players games. after the games we showered and headed out for dinner.

DAY 3(Wednesday): up at half 7 for an 8 o clock fitness session we warmed up with 2 laps of the track and then done 10 mins running which consisted of 15 secs jogging and 15seconds sprinting on the whistle round the track. we came back for breakfast then watched video clips of the girls who were refereeing in gym 2 the day before. At 9:30 we travelled to the other gym to do a session on signalling and mechanics . what we done in this session was got recorded doing signals to the camera of a certain situation that was giving to us that happen on the court. we done this to be able to leaner from ourselves on whether our signals are the way they are suppose to be and to be able to see what we have to work on.. at 12 we returned to the meeting room to watch the video of the mechanics to takes notes etc.
at 1 we travelled to the adratic sea for a day at the beach to enjoy the sun it was 33 degrees. all players and coaches were there aswell and it was really good to get to know the rest of the gang. later on in night we went for dinner and all referees had a boiling and pizza party. lets just say we will be sticking to the officiating from now on not bowling.

DAY 4(thursday): Last day today so loads to do. we started our last day off by debriefing the games that we were recorded on and saw where we were going wrong and what to work on back home.. next topic was special situations where we saw numerous videos from FIBA material of different situations and we had to decide what we would do in discussion groups. as it was the last day there was ALL STAR GAMES . I had the privilege of officiating the final of the all star game aswell as all star games there was 3point shoot out and free throw competition along with a one on one competion. when all the fun and games were over the Mayor of Slovenia officially closed the camp in the closing ceremony and thanked everyone for coming and making it a successful camp. he then handed each country certificates of participation. All coached and players then had an official dinner while the players had there bowling and pizza party. once all the goodbyes were done and dusted it was time to sleep and take in once last look at Slovenia.

Kathleen Kelleher is a product of the successful Brunell Basketball Club in Cork where she has been a star at underage level and also a member of their National League squad for a number of years now. She has made the seamless transition to refereeing and is one of the country’s most promising referees for her age.
She has just completed the NRC's advance referees course where she was one of the top performers while being one of the youngest participants. Kathleen has the potential to achieve a FIBA licence and this clinic is her first step in that direction.
